Accessorising

The “accessoring” element of home design is the most fun and even with a small budget, if chosen carefully, the pieces you buy can transform a room.   Enliven your home with items that mean something to you – favourite photos, a child’s painting or items collected on a memorable holiday.

Even if you can afford it, don’t be tempted to buy all new furniture when doing a room makeover.  Sometimes an eclectic look can be charming and adds character.  If you are fortunate enough to own antique heirlooms these can be teamed very successfully with more modern pieces. Position your furniture wisely -  placing tables and chairs slightly away from the walls enables you to see the room beyond them and gives the impression of more space.

*       Hanging a mirror is a great trick to make a confined space feel larger as it will reflect the light around the room.  The bigger the better.

*       A selection of brightly coloured, plump cushions either on the sofa or piled on the floor to provide extra seating, creates a warm, welcoming feel.

*      Choose stunning ceramics and glass pieces in dazzling shades and arrange in groups of differing heights with aromatic candles or spicy incense.

*       Exotic pot plants, arranged in groups and bathed in subtle lighting give instant atmosphere.  If your room has little or no natural light , invest in the life-like silk plants which are now available.  These are particularly useful in a heavily air-conditioned environment.

*       Choose some pieces of vibrant artwork and hang in groups.  Prints can look as effective as originals, especially if the frames are bold and bright.

Use different textures and materials to create a tactile, feel-good interior.  For example, combine a rustic-style coffee table with a smooth leather sofa and silk cushions.  By mixing textures your room will be more visually stimulating and welcoming.

Finally, add the finishing touch with a vase of fresh, fragrant flowers .  Hopefully, you have now created the perfect ambience you have strived so hard to achieve. So sit back, blissfully, with a glass of wine and the book you have been wanting to read for the longest while.

Enjoy.
