All About Kitchens

The kitchen is the central force around which most households spin.  Whatever the lifestyle of the user, whether home based or out of the house for a large proportion of the day, the kitchen should always be a pleasant place to return to.

If you are contemplating  re-modelling  your kitchen consider first whether you live mostly on a glass of wine and a hastily made sandwich or do you enjoy complicated cooking?  Look at your available space carefully and assess whether there is sufficient room for those new gadgets before you buy them.   Take a “Kitchen counter” survey.  Look for little used items that clutter the area and tidy them away.  Also, address those areas in drawers and behind cupboard doors and discard  those items you do not need.

*          A large kitchen may be easier to organize if it features an island unit.  This can be fitted with a hob, working surface and sink or simply fitted with the necessary power points for operating your portable gadgets.  An island also makes a functional stepping stone between work areas on opposite walls.  In tiny spaces a round table is more compact and blinds take up less visual space than curtains.  Work surfaces look better arranged in an unbroken line.

*          A most important element to consider in the kitchen is safety.  Avoid sharp edges by designing countertops that curve.  Keep knives tucked away and avoid hanging overhead racks in places where people stand or sit.  And don’t forget to locate that hand held fire extinguisher in a prominent place.

*          Cooking and food preparation require good lighting - use incandescent or halogen lighting to create a bright, welcoming environment.

*          If you wish to inject a bold element in your kitchen find a large, stunning piece of artwork, the hues of which can provide the basis of your colour scheme

It is curious how some people will invest substantial sums of money in planning and furnishing a kitchen and yet hang on to the same set of ancient, cracked wooden spoons for cooking!!  It is really worthwhile standing back to take a thoroughly objective view of the state of play in your kitchen!!!  After all, it is usually the most used room in the house.
