STORAGE

You have plucked up the courage to re-decorate your home but are not sure where to begin. Sometimes the whole task just seems too overwhelming!  Why not start by organizing yourself, room by room.   Begin by removing all the unnecessary clutter.  Start in one room and don’t move on until you have finished that room.  Be objective and make decisions about what stays and what goes. Begin by asking yourself some simple questions.

·                    How often do I use that particular item?  Frequently used items should be easily accessible while Items used only occasionally should be neatly stored within easy reach.  Seasonal items, on the other hand, should be securely packaged, marked and kept in long-term storage areas such as the attic or the garage.

·                    Does the item continue to serve a purpose? Decorative items do tend to go in and out of style.  Sentimental items are certainly worth retaining but may be more appropriate in another part of the house.

·                    Do I really need the item any more?  Think carefully – if the answer is no there are many worthwhile charities that would be only too happy to receive your donation!

Once you have finished organizing your home, room by room, you will probably find you need some additional storage products.  Look out for sturdy shelving which, when teamed with decorative baskets for example, can provide an attractive storage solution, especially in a study or child’s bedroom

Consider a fold-away bar in an entertainment area which has limited space.

Where space is a premium but you definitely must have a ‘work out” area at home, why not consider a specially crafted cabinet which conceals home gym equipment?  Surf the internet for a suitable design and ask a local craftsman to build it for you.

In the kitchen, consider a mobile workstation which provides excellent additional space and storage and can be moved to where it is most needed.  Pot racks suspended from the ceiling free up cupboard space and also make it easier to locate a particular pot without having to rummage through the cabinet!

Once you are satisfied that you have eliminated all the unwanted “clutter” and have identified which items will be remaining in each room you can begin to think about your decorating schemes.

Happy sorting!
