FLEA MARKET MAKEOVERS

If this unseasonal wet weather is keeping you indoors, why not use the time to refresh you home with some easy to do makeovers!

·                    Silk scarves come in a variety of patterns and colours – why not use some of your discarded ones to create fabulous new cushion covers?  Cut the scarf to the size and shape required and, before sewing, iron a piece of fusible backing onto the scarf to prevent the fabric from slipping.  Match with a piece of fabric in a complementary colour for the pillow back.  Tumble several cushions together on your bed to create an exciting, bright new look.

·                    Do you have woolen sweaters that shrank when you accidentally washed them in hot water?  Once washed, the wool no longer unravels so you can use these garments to make interesting throw cushions.  Cut various shapes out of the garments and stitch together to make unusual patterns.  Once you have the size required, cut out a matching pillow back and sew together.  Decorate with shells stick on with fabric glue to create striking accents.

·                    A discarded skirt in suede or other beautiful fabric can provide great material for pillows.  Cut out a front and back, sew together and decorate with contrasting buttons and bows.

·                    Stencil some Asian symbols from a book or magazine and transfer them onto a plain silk cushion to bring serenity to any room. Remember to remove the padding before stenciling and place a piece of cardboard inside the cushion cover to prevent the paint seeping through.

·                    Use a glue gun to carefully add decorative trimming to the top or bottom edge of a plain lampshade

·                    Dress up a plain old kitchen stool by making a fabric skirt and adding fancy trim.

·                    Sew a row or two of pearl buttons onto your curtain tie-backs to add a touch of shimmer.

·                    If you have some old picture frames, mount a piece of linen on the cardboard inset using spray adhesive.  Do not replace the glass. Adhere shells or other treasures onto the linen, first spraying them with clear varnish to add a wonderful shine.  Arrange the frames in groups to create an interesting focal point.  To really make a statement, paint the frames in bright, zesty colours.

Have fun!
